About TrailTestedGear
We're campers who got tired of reading gear reviews written by people who clearly never left their desk.
You know the type — those reviews that describe a tent's "premium 68D polyester fabric" but can't tell you if water actually drips through the seams when you're in a downpour. Or cooler reviews that talk about insulation R-values but never actually test whether ice stays frozen for more than three days.
That's not us.
How We Test
Everything we review has been tested in the real world by actual campers. We don't have a lab. We have tents pitched in rain, sleeping bags tested in sub-zero temps, coolers packed with ice at the trailhead, and stoves firing up at 10,000 feet.
Our testing process is simple but thorough:
- Field testing: We use gear in real conditions — rain, wind, cold, heat, rocky ground, mud, the works.
- Extended use: One weekend isn't enough. We test gear over weeks and months to catch wear issues, design flaws, and durability problems.
- Comparative testing: We don't review products in isolation. We test them against competitors so you get real comparisons, not marketing fluff.
- Honest data: We measure, we document, we show our work. If something fails, you'll hear about it.
- Real talk: We tell you what works, what doesn't, what surprised us, and what disappointed us.
What We Look For
When we're testing camping gear, we evaluate five core criteria:
- Performance: Does it actually do what it's supposed to do? Does a tent keep you dry? Does a sleeping bag keep you warm?
- Durability: Will it fall apart after one season? Are seams reinforced? Are materials quality?
- Usability: Is it practical? Can you set it up in the dark? Is it intuitive?
- Value: Is the price justified by the quality and performance? Does it compare fairly to competitors?
- Fit & Feel: How does it actually feel to use? Is it comfortable? Does it feel premium or cheap?
How We Make Money
Here's the thing: we're transparent about how we make money because transparency matters when you're reading reviews.
TrailTestedGear is supported by affiliate commissions. When you click a product link and make a purchase on Amazon, we earn a small commission. This doesn't cost you anything extra — you pay the same price, we just get a small cut for the referral.
However, here's our promise: we never let affiliate incentives influence our reviews. We've tested products we don't recommend, and we won't link to them just for commission. We only recommend gear we genuinely believe is worth your money. If a product isn't good enough, we'll tell you why — even if it costs us a sale.

Why We Do This
We started TrailTestedGear because we were frustrated. We'd spend hours reading reviews online, only to find out the reviewer had clearly never actually used the product. We'd buy based on marketing hype and end up disappointed.
We wanted a resource for people like us — people who take their camping seriously but don't want to waste money on overhyped gear or deal with equipment failure in the backcountry.
Every review on this site is written by someone who has actually used the product. We test gear because we love camping, and we want to help other people enjoy it too.
